Deep subwavelength surface modes in metal-dielectric metamaterials.
We present what we believe to be the first study of deep subwavelength surface modes in binary metal-dielectric metamaterials. By employing anomalous coupling in binary periodicity, peculiar properties of band structure and eigenmode symmetry are obtained. We show that strongly confined plasmonic Tamm-like and Shockley-like surface modes can be formed at the termination of the array. We clarify...
متن کاملNonlinear Tamm states in layered metaldielectric metamaterials
Surface modes appear as a special type of waves localized near an interface separating two different media. In optics, linear electromagnetic surface waves are known to exist at an interface separating homogeneous and periodic dielectric media [1] as well as in layered structures containing thin metal films [2–4]. The interest in the study of nonlinear electromagnetic surface waves has been ren...
متن کاملOptical nonlocality induced Zitterbewegung near the Dirac point in metal-dielectric multilayer metamaterials.
The optical nonlocality near the Dirac point in infinite periodic metal-dielectric multilayer metamaterials is investigated through the dispersion relation analysis according to the transfer-matrix method. It is revealed that both the symmetric and asymmetric surface plasmon polariton modes present the zero nonlocal effective permittivity, and the degeneracy of these two modes results in the em...
متن کاملNegative index metamaterials based on metal-dielectric nanocomposites for imaging applications
Negative index metamaterials are demonstrated based on metal-dielectric nanocomposites prepared using a versatile bottom-up nanofabrication approach. The method involves the incorporation of vertically aligned metal nanowires such as Au and Ag inside dielectric aluminum oxide nanotemplates. Optical absorbance measurements show resonance peaks corresponding to the transverse and longitudinal sur...
متن کاملTwo-dimensional chalcogenide nanoplates as tunable metamaterials via chemical intercalation.
New plasmonic materials with tunable properties are in great need for nanophotonics and metamaterials applications. Here we present two-dimensional layered, metal chalcogenides as tunable metamaterials that feature both dielectric photonic and plasmonic modes across a wide spectral range from the infrared to ultraviolet. The anisotropic layered structure allows intercalation of organic molecule...
